carillonneur and Paweł Hulisz, trumpeter
Monika Kaźmierczak,
born in 1977 in Danzig,
Poland, is the city carillonneur of her home town, where
she plays the carillons of the Saint Catherine's Church
and the Danzig town hall. In 2003 the Dutch government
gave her a Huygens Scholarship to study the carillon at
the Netherlands Carillon School in Amersfoort, where she
was received her Bachelor's diploma in 2004 and her
Master's in 2005. In 2007 she received a cultural
scholarship from the city of Danzig to take master classes
in carillon performance given by Geert D'hollander at the
Royal Carillon School "Jef Denyn" in Mechelen, Belgum. In
2012 the Stanisław Moniuszko Academy of Music in Danzig
awarded her a doctoral degree in carillon performance. In
2003, 2004 and 2013 she won first, second and third prize
at the Dutch carillon competitions in Almelo, Venlo and the
competition for carillon duos in Zwolle respectively.In 2021 the city of Danzig awarded her the Splendor Gedanensis
and she also received the Gloria
Artis, the
bronze medal for cultural achievements,
from the Polish
Ministry of Culture.
From 2011 to 2015 she was the
president of the Polish Carillon Association. She has been directing the Danzig
Carillon Festival since 2013,performs as part of the Danzig festival
of early music Actus Humanus, plays
occasionally with Danzig jazz trumpeters as well
as trumpeters specialized in performing tower
music and gives recitals in many European
countries and the USA. She has released CDs of
music for carillon and jazz-trumpet, tower music
played by carillon and trumpet and premiered and
recorded carillon music written by leading
contemporary Polish composers such as Zymunt Krauze
and Hanna Kulenty. Her CD featuring contemporary
Polish carillon music which was released in 2021
was nominated the following year for the
prestigious Fryderyk-Award.
Paweł Hulisz, born in 1975
in Inowrocław,
Poland, is a trumpeter who works together with
the Musical Theatre of Gdynia. He studied
playing the modern trumpet at the Academy of
Music in Danzig and the historical trumpet at
the Music Academy in Bydgoszcz and graduated
in 1994 and 2013 respectively. In 2021 he was
awarded a Doctorate in Fine Arts from the
Academy of Music in Danzig. In
2012 he received the Cultural Scholarship of
the President of Danzig which enabled him to
record his first soloalbum which featured
Polish music from the 1920s and 1930s. He
co-founded the Keepin' Tradition Jazz
Quartet in 2004 and the Krystyna
Durys Band in 2015 and has worked as a
session musician with a number of prominent
Polish popstars. He also performs baroque and
classical music on historical trumpets and in
2015 founded the Tubicinatores Gedanenses
ensemble, which has revived the historical
practice of playing music from the towers of
churches and town halls. Since 2017 he has
staged the Danzig Tower Music Festival and
in 2019 he founded the Capella Warmiensis
Restituta ensemble which specializes in
performing the music of the Warmians, a
Prussian tribe that lived in northeastern
Poland until the 18th century. His
performances as
a session musician, chamber musician and
soloist have been featured on over sixty CDs
including the album Symphonic Theatre of
Dreams recorded with the Sinfonietta
Consonus and he has taken part in many
music festivals.
