Sjoerd
Tamminga
Sjoerd
Tamminga, born
1947 in
Goes, Netherlands, began learning to play the carillon when he
was
eleven years
old and was given lessons by the city carillonneur of Goes,
Wilhelm
Harthoorn.
While studying dentistry in Amsterdam he continued studying the
carillon, this
time with the carillonneur of the Amsterdam Oudekerk, Cees
Roelofs, who
had
been a pupil of Jef Denyn at the carillon school in Mechelen,
Belgium
and
received his diploma there in 1933. Tamminga followed his
example and
went on
to attend the same institution and obtain his own diploma „with
highest
honors“
in 1976. In the same year he won the first prize at the carillon
competition of
the Holland-Festival in Tiel. In 1977 he was named city
carillonneur of
Goes.
He performs at carillon festivals throughout Europe and records
CDs. He
specializes in playing popular melodies, evergreens, and jazz.
Together
with
his son, the carillonneur and composer Jorrit Tamminga, he
explores the
possibilities offered by combining carillon with electronics.
